The Skerwink Trail

The Skerwink Trail

One of our main motivations for moving to Newfoundland was the ability to do amazing hikes and enjoy the natural beauty of the province. The Skerwink Trail, located in Port Rexton, is considered to be amongst Canada’s best trails. We hiked it on our vacation two years ago, and were keen to do it again. So with a warm forecast and a free day, we made the hour’s drive from our home.

The trail takes you around an elevated point of land that reaches into Trinity Bay. We saw sea stacks, whales, bird colonies, lichen-laden fir forests (say that 5 times fast!), moose droppings, bald eagles, views of Trinity and Port Rexton, rocky beaches, and of course, the ocean.

“Skerwink” is a Newfoundland term for a bird more commonly known as a shearwater. I don’t think we saw any skerwinks, but we saw a colony of gull-like birds that might have been Kittiwakes. Or they might just have been seagulls. We also saw a colony of dark-coloured birds that might have been cormorants. Or not.

When we were finished our hike, we visited Port Rexton Brewing, which is one of the premier craft breweries in the province. It’s popular with both locals and tourists, and apparently dog owners. We had a beer on their large patio, and ordered grilled cheese sandwiches and fries from Oh My Cheeses, a food truck that is a semi-permanent fixture on the patio. It was a great end to a great day! Here are some photos.

  1. Beautiful; nature without a “fix” from humans. That said, what is the town we can see in the background, behind the lighthouse? And is that a bat on the stone? Love your posts.

    1. That is Trinity, which has lots of historic buildings and a more stereotypical look of a Newfoundland village. And yes, someone painted the Batman image on a rock and left it on the trail. Why not?!

    1. Yes, Labrador does get overlooked. I don’t know if they have the same linguistic quirks as the island does. Something to find out more about!

  2. I love how you are taking full advantage of the reasons you moved to NL, and most of all, I love that you are sharing the experiences with us. Thanks for taking us along on all your adventures!

  3. I love the pictures of the water, rock, beaches and yes, lichen laden fir forests. I am confident that the trail you hiked was amongst the best in the world. So isolated and beautiful. We hiked some amazing places in Scotland, but it often felt like Disneyland with all the traffic – human and vehicular.
